Modern, Sophisticated & Bold: Jazz up your work attire

Modern, Sophisticated & Bold

Sometimes “officewear” can be pretty boring, depending on how strict your dress code is, and your professional wardrobe can easily fall into a rut when it consists of coordinating black, gray and navy separates. Sure, it makes getting dressed in the morning pretty darn easy, but your wardrobe is a reflection of who you are — and you’re no boring fashionista!

Injecting a little personality into your work wardrobe doesn’t have to be difficult or pricey — it’s simply a matter of adding a few eye-catching accessories to your neutral staple pieces!

Here, I’ve collected a few options that fit into three categories: Modern. Sophisticated. And Bold. If you can score affordable accessories that fall into each of these three categories, it’s super easy to dial up the “wow” factor from monochrome to chic to statement-making!

My favorite pieces in this set are the coral trench coat, the bright blue pumps and the geometric necklace. I’m also totally digging all three rings!

If you want to dial down the color for a demure look, opt for the pale pink pumps and oval pink ring with the pale green trench. For a bolder style, pair the coral trench with the blue bag. And for a totally monochrome look, stick with the gray pumps, black trench and the scalloped silver bracelet.

Mixing and matching accessories is an art form, so experiment with your own work attire ahead of time and then group accessories by day for your entire week to keep those “accidentally slept in” mornings stress-free. Your outfit will look so chic and put together that no one will notice that your hair is still wet!

Current Obsession: Teal & Coral

teal & coral

Every time I see this color combo, it always brightens my day. How could it not?! Sunny coral and exotic teal remind me of tropical locales — I keep getting visions of leisurely strolling among throngs of street vendors in my coral skirt and teal shoes on some tropical island somewhere. So basically, I want nothing more than to make a whole wardrobe of this color combo right now (so sick of the cold here in the Northeast)!

It’s also the best way to incorporate the uber-popular shades of teal and turquoise from last year into your new wardrobe of peachy-pink brights for this season!

I suggest starting with a two-tone outfit, incorporating a neutral — white is perfect for up top, then pair with a peachy skirt, like above, creating a simple and chic start to your look.  Get your feet into a pair of nude pumps or go all out with some bright teal strappy sandals! I love the ankle strap on the platform sandals pictured above — super sexy!

Then simply pile on the coral and teal accessories! I’m obsessed with clutches right now, so the coral clutch is calling my name. The ladylike teal bag is classy and stylish, too. Stack on some great bangles or a statement bracelet like the gorgeous and unique amazonite cluster bracelet pictured above or slip on a cocktail ring with a creamy coral cabochon and you’re good to go! (You may notice that I’ve used that very same octopus ring in a different color combo in a post I wrote about coral before! I’m hooked!)

Whichever pieces you choose to flaunt the trend, you’ll be safe in knowing that teal & coral are the sort of bold color combo that just works, so no worries of looking like you went overboard. Cue the compliments!

CheapChica’s: Kate Middleton’s dress

The CheapChica’s Guide to Style

Posted: 31 Dec 2010 09:37 PM PST

Kate Middleton. She has been one of the most talked about girls as of late, and I have to say that I adore her.  And no, it’s not just because she is about to be a princess (although that is an added bonus)!

Yes, she is a very lucky lady, and seriously, how cute are they?  What I admire most about Ms. Middleton is how classy and refined she is.  Really, she seems like such a class-act, and I applaud her for that.  It’s grueling trying to find a tasteful girl in a sea of Miley Cyrus wannabes, so it’s no wonder that women of all ages, ranging from fifteen to sixty-five, are trying to mimic her style.

When she and Prince William announced their engagement, Kate wore a dress by London label, Issa, and it literally flew off the shelves within 24 hours of the announcement.  Great for the designer, but sad for us.

If you’re like me, and you can’t get enough of Kate’s elegance and good taste, then you’re in luck!  I’ve found some stylish alternatives to Kate’s much talked about blue dress, and you can wear these options anywhere from a party to a date, and yes, even an engagement announcement!

Also try pairing this simple wrap dress with the accessories below (keep it minimal!).  Unfortunately, I won’t be able to help you match the gorgeous rock on her finger or that handsome prince on her arm, but I’ll try for everything else.

Cheers!

Holiday Bling…no party dress is complete without it!

Holiday Bling 2010

Oh how I love buying new accessories for the holiday season! So much so, in fact, that I end up spending more money on my jewelry than on my holiday party dresses.

If you have a job like mine, you usually wear jeans and sweaters to work or boring dress pants with tailored tops, so holiday parties (or any parties, for that matter) are a chance to really run wild with fashion. In my opinion, great accessories are as much of an investment as a wardrobe staple piece like a pencil skirt or classic blazer because they can completely transform the look of any outfit, especially your favorite LBD — I look at my LBDs as blank canvasses before accessorizing!

This holiday season, I’ve been in search of something a little different — accessories that are funky yet classy and in surprising shades like rose, navy blue and lots of gold! The goal is to aim for a hint of holiday, not to go overboard and end up looking like a fully trimmed Christmas tree. And remember…balance everything out. Have a great pair of shoulder-grazing dangly earrings? Skip the necklace. Wearing a huge cocktail ring? Look for a more demure bracelet or put chunky bangles on the opposite wrist. (I’m guilty of overloading my left arm because I’m right-handed, and I don’t like anything big on that hand.)

My favorite pieces in this set are the peacock bangle (so chic) and the “rose gold” spiked cocktail ring. Though I don’t typically wear gold jewelry, the gold art deco cuff is so cool!

Everything listed is under $50. So get to accessorizing!

Flirty, fun and functional TOYWATCH

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

I’ve been reading a lot recently that the wristwatch is “dead.” Those 25 and under simply don’t wear watches, but rely on cell phones to tell time proclaim these articles. The one thing these pieces don’t mention (and to be honest, I am referring to semi-nerdy publications like Computerworld and IT Professional) is that a wristwatch is a serious vehicle for showcasing personal style.

I am old enough to remember when Swatch watches were the rage (my grandmother brought me back one from Switzerland and I was in transports of joy since the style wasn’t available in the US!). Up until then, watches fell into two categories: dressy and casual. I had the requisite “dress watches” in yellow and white gold, as well as a men’s Timex on a grosgrain band for everyday. Suddenly the way we saw the wristwatch was completely changed – watches were sporty, colorful, fun!

So, when I first saw the new Jelly Watch from TOYWATCH I knew we were on the threshold of yet another revolution in wristwatches.

Jellies are adorable. Simply pick a watch color from among 10 choices and then the real fun begins. You can choose from a selection of straps the include kicky brights like electric green, Pepto Bismol pink, lemon, and fire engine red. Or opt for a more staid black, white, or grey. There are 110 combinations!

The Jelly Watch has a Plasteramic case/bezel and a rubber strap with an ultra soft matte finish. At 40 mm (1.60 inch) they are substantial enough to make a statement on your wrist (especially when you’ve chosen a jailbird orange watch with a bright teal strap!)

Each watch comes with a matching strap. Watch Retail $175. Then, you can choose from a rainbow of strap colors. Simply pop and swap for a totally different look. Additional Strap Retail $65.

The TOYWATCH phenomenon includes not only the amazing Jelly Watches, but a tremendous selection of other styles like the Ceramic Watch Collection, a Plasteramic Watch Collection, the Heavy Metal Watch Collection, and more. Timepieces from TOYWATCH have been featured in every major style publication from Instyle, to Vogue, to Lucky.

Plus, the firm’s watches have adorned the wrists of dozens (and dozens!) of celebrities – everyone from Dakota Fanning, to Katie Holmes, to Oprah Winfrey loves this brand.

Watches from TOYWATCH are available in more than 300 fine stores, including Barney’s, Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdales. A  store locator is available on the firm’s website or you can even shop online at TOYWATCH.

I’d say “the time is ripe” for a fab new watch by TOYWATCH! What do you think?

CheapChica’s Blog Spotlight of the Week: Stud earrings

The CheapChica’s Guide to Style

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 09:18 PM PST

Ever since my ears were pierced I have been the ambassador of all earrings large and dangling . That was my thing. But, the embellished necklines and statement necklaces (Olivia Palermo is the queen of these!) we have seen the past couple of seasons meant something had to give in the bling department. So, I have become a new fan of small and subtle.

Understated earrings can ensure that your look has polish from head to toe without overdoing it. Whether you are having one of those days when a sleek pony is all you have time for or you are sporting loose locks, you can never go wrong with a little stud.

Nordstrom has always been my go to accessory shop due to their continuous ability to replicate the high-end jewelry trends on a budget. This season is no exception. I got these pyramid studs, similar to Anita Ko’s running $275 a pair, for only $18! I wear them non-stop!!!

They add the perfect hint of bad girl glam without being overdone. I also love the vintage, ladylike feel of slightly larger stud earrings with faux stones like these from Charlotte Russe for only $4.00!

Some of these even come in handy three packs, like the plastic ones you bought when you were twelve, so if you get sick of one pair you can always rotate. With so many other statement pieces available to us this season, it’s ok for the ears to take a back seat…in sparkle of course, not in style.

Stunning jewelry from Ariane Arazi for 2011

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

We’ve just returned from a weekend at the amazing JA Jewelry Show in New York. Industry trade shows are terrific for inspiration – there are so many incredibly talented designers out there. Plus, it’s fun to get an insider’s sneak peak into what my favorite shops will be showing in their jewelry cases for 2011!

One thing that we really noticed this year was the creativity of various designers in their choice of materials. Reclaimed and recycled pieces are still hot, but we also noticed many, many “alternative” materials.”

With precious metals prices continuing to skyrocket, it’s not surprising that designers are switching gears. What was surprising was the luxurious look and feel of these pieces!

One designer that I’ve recently discovered is a perfect example of this out-of-the-box thinking. Ariane Arazi comes from a long line of exceptional jewelry designers. Her

late grandfather, Isaac Hasbani, founded Hasbani Gioelli in Milan, Italy — over 50 years ago!

Her own line, Ariane Arazi Jewelry, is inspired by the latest fashion trends and colors. And, in keeping with her family’s tradition, each piece – from delicate earrings, to statement necklaces, to stunning rings, and unique bracelets — is handcrafted by Ariane herself.

Her satin bracelets, pictured, are a particular favorite of mine. These have a luxe look (and feel!) and are handcrafted from satin, embellished with a sterling silver buckle. These bracelets work with everything from casual weekend wear to dressier date clothes and are available at Haute Look, Beyond the Rack and Enviius.Retail $130.

October stone of the month: Cinnabar

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Of course, I’d heard of cinnabar. But, much as I hate to admit it, I’d never actually seen a piece of the highly desirable, traditional Chinese jewelry until I found the fabulous zen jewelz company.

Cinnabar gets its name from the red mineral cinnabar (mercury sulfide) that was once used to give the distinctive red color to the lacquer used in the jewelry making process. Today, cinnabar jewelry is created using a dyed red resin, and the result is simply stunning.

My cinnabar bracelet from zen jewelz is absolutely gorgeous. A deep crimson red, the exquisitely carved beads are housed on a classic stretch bracelet. Nestled amongst the intricate beads is a “karma tag.” Mine says “balance,” but other options include “harmony,” “acceptance” and more. Retail $125

According to the firm, various gemstones are not simply used for adornment, but actually provide specific types of support — such as amethyst for intuition and turquoise for health. The zen jewelz site even has a useful gem index that fully explains the helpful principles of each gem.

My cinnabar bracelet “attracts abundance, increases assertiveness in one’s endeavors without inciting aggression, connects to the acceptance of everything being perfect exactly as it is and releases energy blockages and aligns the energy centers!”

In addition to a serious selection of classic stretch bracelets, the zen jewelz line also offers so much more. Using gems from aquamarine, to carnelian, to black spinel, the line is simply filled with spectacular necklaces, bracelets, and earrings. You are sure to find just the right look. Or, you can even make your own, with custom hoopz and sliders earrings!

Although zen jewelz is already a favorite among Hollywood A-listers, the line has recently gained a boost with the general public The firm’s designs made headlines on the Real Housewives of New Jersey reality show last season when show personality Jacqueline became pregnant after wearing a zen jewelz fertility bracelet.

An online shop is available for new products, limited edition items, one of a kind pieces and even closeout jewelry!

Show off your unique aesthetic with whimsical jewelry from Little Purple Cow

Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

What is that old saying… you can never be too rich or too thin? I must add that you can never have too much jewelry, either!

I was recently introduced to the Little Purple Cow jewelry company and although my jewelry box is already filled to overflowing, I am lusting after their unusual, whimsical pieces!

Little Purple Cow’s sterling silver jewelry collections uniquely blend the avant-garde with the traditional. Named for designer Nicole Joy Leibman’s childhood love of collecting purple cows, each unique piece draws from nostalgic artifacts to evoke the most personal of associations.

One of my favorite collections is the quirky “Silverware” collection. I just received the Helen “spoon ring” which I wore over the weekend to rave reviews from family and friends. The ring is cast in solid sterling silver and a delicate butterfly, perched on a vine, is the centerpiece of the elaborate design. The ring actually takes its shape from an early twentieth century teaspoon! Retail $85

Another outstanding collection is the “Storybook Ring” collection featuring images from traditional, favorite childhood tales like Little Red Riding Hood, Mary Poppins and more.

This collection has already gained a celebrity following. In fact, Kristen Stewart of the Twilight series was recently spotting wearing her very own storybook ring from Little Purple Cow! Retail $90.

But Little Purple Cow has more than just a dazzling array of rings. The firm offers truly spectacular sterling necklaces and cuff bracelets including the Lara,  pictured. The pattern reflects an old world elegance and like all sterling pieces by Little Purple Cow, the cuffs are finished with an antique or high gloss Rhodium shine. A true statement piece! Retail $320

To find a store near you, visit the Little Purple Cow store locator or shop online at Little Purple Cow.
