CheapChica’s: J.Hud’s draped wrap dress

The CheapChica’s Guide to Style

Dear CheapChica…

Posted: 16 Dec 2010 09:48 PM PST

I love your blog! I check it every morning while I have my coffee at work. Yesterday I was flipping through the most recent People Magazine when I saw this dress on Jennifer Hudson and thought this dress would be perfect for the holidays!! I love the style of it. Please help me find out who makes it & where to get it, or something like it!

XOXO, Christina

Hey Christina!

You are right; Jennifer Hudson looks totally fab in that dress! I love the loose draping (that somehow emphasizes J-Hud’s rockin’ new bod!), the burnt sienna color that’s perfect for the colder months, the Grecian draping, and the asymmetrical skirt that brings to mind the tulip-look that has been everywhere this season. (I also am really digging those silver tipped Louboutin heels… but that’s another post for another day!)

I’ll give you the bad news first: that dress is Lanvin, so probably not the affordable brand you were hoping for! But here’s the good news… after some CheapChica style sleuthing, I’ve found some dresses that capture elements of the style without the luxury label price tag. For only $36, this Lulu’s find is strikingly similar to Hudson’s choice. The deep purple color is perfectly wintery and I adore the sexy slit in the back.

If you’re not digging that choice, it’s all about what you love the most about the dress… If you’re willing to give up the long sleeves, this charcoal wrap dress for less than $75 works–and with tights and a blazer or cardigan, it’s definitely wearable for winter.

Now if it’s long sleeves or nada, these other options are a tad pricier because they’re brand new for the season. If you’re all about rich color, I’d go for this deep purple Ella Moss number, and the asymmetries in these finds from Bailey 44 and MaxStudio are super creative and gorge!

I hope one of these suits you, Christina! Leave a comment letting us know what you think!

Merry Girls’ Night: Relax with cute pjs and your best girlfriends!

Tuesday, December 21st, 2010
Girls' Night

After all that running around and holiday stress, most of us need some serious relaxation time!

This year, try hosting a girls’ holiday slumber party, complete with cute pjs, slippers and nail polish! It’s a great way to catch up with friends and de-stress during this oh-so-stressful holiday season. And it’s actually a great opportunity to exchange gifts, or just make the whole night a gift to each other to save money and focus on what’s most important: you and your girls! A girls’ night is especially enticing for you or any of your girlfriends who may be single and feeling a little lonely around the holidays.

If you’re like me, you find any excuse to buy something new — and Victoria’s Secret probably has the cutest and comfiest pajamas out there for a girls’ night. Grab one of their long nightshirts for instant comfort, and after you and your girls give each other manicures, pedicures and makeovers, slip on a pair of polka dot satin slippers and pop in your favorite holiday movie!

Happy Stylish Holidays!

CheapChica’s: Essie Nail Polish Gift Set

Wednesday, December 15th, 2010

The CheapChica’s Guide to Style

Posted: 10 Dec 2010 09:52 PM PST

Pick this up for yourself or give this as a gift to any girl who loves a great manicure. This four pack was featured in the J.Crew Holiday Gift Guide. I love Essie nail polish and so does J.Crew, they’re offering 2 different color sets for just $20!

Essie’s colors are effortlessly girlie and chic at the same time. Choose between the Vixen Vermillionare set and the Ballerina Clam Bake set. The Vixen set features statement reds, oranges, and pinks. But, I prefer the unique colors of the Clam Bake set (pictured left). The more subtle set is great for the season and you will still get that pop of color with clambake orange color.

Don’t forget about the little Cheap Chicas in your life, J.Crew also has a set for perfect mini Essie lovers in your life for $20 as well. These colors are fabulously girly…I might even like them better! I love the light blue and festive gold that can add sparkle to any occasion!

And if you’re giving these as a gift, make sure you wrap fast so you don’t keep them for yourself!

CheapChica’s: Sequined Cocktail Dress

Wednesday, December 8th, 2010

The CheapChica’s Guide to Style

Posted: 05 Dec 2010 09:42 PM PST

Now that Thanksgiving is over and done with, and the leftovers have all been gobbled up, it’s time to transition into full-on shopping mode.  Once you check everyone off your list, why not treat yourself to something special… and what better way to do that than with a dazzling little number that you’ll be wearing into 2011?

The perfect New Years Eve dress has got to be the sequined mini.  Like Lilliana, I lust after sequins, and what I love most about these cocktail dresses is that they leave a lot to the imagination. They’re stunning, memorable and eye-catching, they show a lot of leg (but not too much), yet they abide by one of my #1 rules: if there’s a lot of skin on the bottom, keep the skin on the top to a minimum, and vice versa.

Balmain never ceases to amaze us with their mind-blowing sequin designs: from blazers to tops, and of course, to dresses, these collections are always a celeb favorite (mine too; just wish I could afford it!).

Each season, my favorite piece from Balmain is almost always their fresh take on the sequined cocktail dress.  But I have to say that right now, I am absolutely loving this long-sleeved mini from French Connection.  It’s almost a carbon copy of a Balmain design, but I have to say that as much as I can’t get enough them, the French Connection dress is a heck of a lot more practical.

However, at a price tag of $298 + tax, it may exceed your budget, so I managed to find some other fabulous options at a fraction of the cost. Forever 21 has this one and this one for under $30 and I love the look of an asymmetrical sequin dress!

Can I also add that ASOS has come out with a dead-ringer for the Alice + Olivia sequined mini-dress that was spotted on so many fabulous ladies from Lauren Conrad to Marissa Miller last year?  I know it’s a tad bit early to start the hunt for the perfect New Years Eve dress, but this really is perfect, and what better way to count down to the new year than in a sparkly cocktail dress?  I can’t think of any better way, myself…

Current Obsession: Black Lace-Up Booties

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Most of the time, I stick to tall boots in cooler weather because flats just don’t keep my feet warm — my feet are always cold! But sometimes, tall boots just aren’t ideal, and in those cases I’m often stuck with no other option.

At least I thought so until I saw these outdoorsy booties (left) and these wedge booties (right)! For me, they have to be black. But the ones on the left are also offered in a light shade of gray, and MySpringShoes.com has a variety of ankle booties in brown, too.

After initially spotting these two pairs, I scoured the internet for similar booties elsewhere. Honestly, all the other pairs I found didn’t compare to these (in my mind), but I did find a cute pair with shearling lining at Charlotte Ruse. And another stylish pair of lace-ups at Forever21.

Right now, my heart is set on the pair pictured upper left, but $69.99 isn’t quite in my budget, so I’ll have to keep looking or wait for them to go on sale! Or perhaps they’ll be the latest addition to my ever-growing Christmas Wish List…

My find of the day? Cozy, comfortable and stylish sheepskin boots by Whooga

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

I’m a snow bunny. To be clear, what I mean is that I don’t ski, snowboard, or take part in strenuous activities like snowmobiling or snowshoeing. What I do (and do very well!) is sip cocoa in front of a warm fireplace and sincerely admire those outside taking part in these activities!

Since I don’t participate in traditional winter sports, I have developed a winter  “look” that is sporty but notseriously sporty (meaning no silk long johns, thermal fleece or arctic-extreme parkas for me!). That’s why I love to wear traditional “ugg style boots” or traditional “Australian sheepskin boots.”  They may look sporty, but really they are cozy, comfortable and super stylish.

Recently, I was excited to be introduced to Whooga boots because they fit my aesthetic so perfectly. Whooga is an Australian alternative fashion label that is the fastest growing winter boot brand in the world! My frosty toes now have a fabulous option when it comes to choosing an authentic sheepskin boot!

One of the things that sets boots by Whooga apart from other sheepskin boots is the –firm’s use of ThermoFleece™ —  a very special grading of extremely thick and plush leathers. The result is a great fit, and these boots are warmer and more luxurious than typical ugg style boots. Plus, each and every pair of Whooga boots is constructed by hand, stitch by stitch, with amazing attention to detail.

Whooga has a wonderful selection of boots – everything from classic tall,  to classic short,  and even mini heights. There is also a wonderful array of colors including neutrals like chestnut, chocolate, black and gray, as well as fashion colors like gold, pink and even violet! Retail $114 – $124 US.

In addition to popular women’s boots, they also have boots for men and even for kids!

The best part about Whooga (and maybe the reason they are growing so quickly!) is their 100% Satisfaction Assurance because they are just that confident that everyone who tries on a pair of Whooga boots will be satisfied! If you do not love your boots, let them know and they’ll organize a full refund – it’s really simple!

To order, simply visit Whooga – you’ll be glad you did. Now, can someone please pass this hot cocoa?

Easy ponchos add no-fuss style

Friday, November 12th, 2010

Like you, I’m a busy woman. In addition to writing several blogs, overseeing marketing and public relations for the Whimsy Worldwide jewelry company, and running the literacy non-profit Success Won’t Wait, I also have a husband, three kids, a dog and two cats. Whew!

As a lifelong fashionista I’ve had to learn to take some shortcuts regarding clothing choices to save time without compromising style. During a typical day, I often have to dash out at a moments’ notice to: a) go to the bank, b) pick up a child at a game/practice/sleepover, or even c) get more milk (Yes. I forgot, again.).

Since I don’t want to appear in public looking… ahem…frumpy, I found the perfect solution – the Laurene V-neck poncho from Affordable Scarves.com. Capes, ponchos, and shawls are without question some of this fall’s hottest trends. I first noticed it when I saw Kate Hudson in a striking Louise Vuitton poncho on the pages of InStyle magazine and filed it away for future thought. Then, just last month, Glamour magazine gushed about “24 Completely Cool Ponchos” as part of their Fall Fashion Trends 2010 piece and I knew this was a trend I couldn’t ignore!

For me, a poncho is easier to wear than a shawl – no falling off of your shoulders — and I prefer the look to a cape, which actually seems more like a winter coat substitute. This poncho is simple to wear and can easily take your outfit from drab to fab just by slipping it over your head. It’s the perfect cover up when you need to dash out quickly – and it covers a multitude of sins!

The Laurene is available in two sophisticated colors – the warm camel pictured and classic go-with-anything black. With ribbed trim and a cross-over V-neck, the stylish Laurene will keep you looking great all the way through the winter! Retail $17.95, On Sale Now $15.26!

While you are at AffordbleScarves.com, make sure you check out the tons (and tons!) of animal print scarvesfloral scarves, wraps, and infinity scarves – these are all right on trend and oh-so-affordable. The firm even has a brand-new site called Scarves.net which is dedicated to showing all the different ways to tie those scarves!

Flirty, fun and functional TOYWATCH

Thursday, November 11th, 2010

I’ve been reading a lot recently that the wristwatch is “dead.” Those 25 and under simply don’t wear watches, but rely on cell phones to tell time proclaim these articles. The one thing these pieces don’t mention (and to be honest, I am referring to semi-nerdy publications like Computerworld and IT Professional) is that a wristwatch is a serious vehicle for showcasing personal style.

I am old enough to remember when Swatch watches were the rage (my grandmother brought me back one from Switzerland and I was in transports of joy since the style wasn’t available in the US!). Up until then, watches fell into two categories: dressy and casual. I had the requisite “dress watches” in yellow and white gold, as well as a men’s Timex on a grosgrain band for everyday. Suddenly the way we saw the wristwatch was completely changed – watches were sporty, colorful, fun!

So, when I first saw the new Jelly Watch from TOYWATCH I knew we were on the threshold of yet another revolution in wristwatches.

Jellies are adorable. Simply pick a watch color from among 10 choices and then the real fun begins. You can choose from a selection of straps the include kicky brights like electric green, Pepto Bismol pink, lemon, and fire engine red. Or opt for a more staid black, white, or grey. There are 110 combinations!

The Jelly Watch has a Plasteramic case/bezel and a rubber strap with an ultra soft matte finish. At 40 mm (1.60 inch) they are substantial enough to make a statement on your wrist (especially when you’ve chosen a jailbird orange watch with a bright teal strap!)

Each watch comes with a matching strap. Watch Retail $175. Then, you can choose from a rainbow of strap colors. Simply pop and swap for a totally different look. Additional Strap Retail $65.

The TOYWATCH phenomenon includes not only the amazing Jelly Watches, but a tremendous selection of other styles like the Ceramic Watch Collection, a Plasteramic Watch Collection, the Heavy Metal Watch Collection, and more. Timepieces from TOYWATCH have been featured in every major style publication from Instyle, to Vogue, to Lucky.

Plus, the firm’s watches have adorned the wrists of dozens (and dozens!) of celebrities – everyone from Dakota Fanning, to Katie Holmes, to Oprah Winfrey loves this brand.

Watches from TOYWATCH are available in more than 300 fine stores, including Barney’s, Henri Bendel, Bergdorf Goodman, Neiman Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdales. A  store locator is available on the firm’s website or you can even shop online at TOYWATCH.

I’d say “the time is ripe” for a fab new watch by TOYWATCH! What do you think?

CheapChica’s Blog Spotlight of the Week: Stud earrings

The CheapChica’s Guide to Style

Posted: 09 Nov 2010 09:18 PM PST

Ever since my ears were pierced I have been the ambassador of all earrings large and dangling . That was my thing. But, the embellished necklines and statement necklaces (Olivia Palermo is the queen of these!) we have seen the past couple of seasons meant something had to give in the bling department. So, I have become a new fan of small and subtle.

Understated earrings can ensure that your look has polish from head to toe without overdoing it. Whether you are having one of those days when a sleek pony is all you have time for or you are sporting loose locks, you can never go wrong with a little stud.

Nordstrom has always been my go to accessory shop due to their continuous ability to replicate the high-end jewelry trends on a budget. This season is no exception. I got these pyramid studs, similar to Anita Ko’s running $275 a pair, for only $18! I wear them non-stop!!!

They add the perfect hint of bad girl glam without being overdone. I also love the vintage, ladylike feel of slightly larger stud earrings with faux stones like these from Charlotte Russe for only $4.00!

Some of these even come in handy three packs, like the plastic ones you bought when you were twelve, so if you get sick of one pair you can always rotate. With so many other statement pieces available to us this season, it’s ok for the ears to take a back seat…in sparkle of course, not in style.
